My Story

As a musician and music-lover I believe strongly in the transformative effect music can have on individual lives and as a means to bring together communities in a meaningful and joyful way. I feel very lucky to be able to do something to support that through my work with the Glad Foundation, helping support access to music-making opportunities for people in Glasgow's Southside regardless of age, background or ability.

In 2019 a team of us walked the Mighty Stride and had an amazing time, raising nearly £8k in the process! With your support we would love to do even better this year - the more we raise the more people we can support in accessing music whilst keeping participation free and affordable so there are as few barriers to entry as possible. Funds raised through the Kiltwalk will directly support:

  • samba drumming for young people living in poverty in Govanhill
  • group and one-to-one sessions for young people with autism spectrum disorder
  • group music-making for adults with additional support needs (and their support workers)
  • musicianship and guitar for primary school children in Pollokshields
  • guitar and bass group lessons for high school students in Shawlands
  • Kids Choir
  • 14+ Drumming School
  • 14+ music technology workshops

EDIT:

"With the Covid-19 crisis enveloping the country and devastating our ability to operate, like so many small businesses and charities wanting to safeguard the well-being of our staff, participants, and wider community, The Glad Foundation has been forced to close our doors as of 17/03/2020.

BUT there is a silver-lining in the shape of the extraordinary announcement from the Hunter Foundation, that despite having to postpone the Glasgow Kiltwalk until it is considered safe to run it, they will add the 50% to funds raised by March 31st 2020 and then pay out to charities as soon as possible after that. This is a lifeline that will make all the difference to organisations such as ourselves.

Any sponsorship made between now and March 31st will be invaluable in helping the Glad Foundation stay afloat during this period of unprecedented uncertainty. We thank you for your generosity and look forward to be back up and running and making music with the young and vulnerable members of our community in Glasgow as soon as possible!

Music has the ability to bring us together like almost nothing else in the world and so we believe passionately in supporting opportunities for everyone in our community to be involved in music-making, whatever their age, ability or background. For that reason we are walking to raise money for The Glad Foundation.

The Glad Foundation runs weekly music workshops and lessons in its own space in Shawlands, and in partnership with local schools and organisations to give opportunities to harder to reach young people. By doing the Kiltwalk we will raise funds to support the Glad Foundation's programme, helping provide essential continuity and minimising barriers to participation, keeping it accessible and affordable for all. Money raised will directly support the delivery of:

  • samba drumming for primary school children living in poverty in Govanhill
  • one-to-one and group music-making for young people with autism spectrum disorder
  • music group for adults with additional support needs and their support workers
  • musicianship and guitar for primary school children in Pollokshields
  • after school guitar and bass group tuition for high school students in Shawlands
  • Primary School Kids Choir
  • 14+ Drumming School
  • 14+ music technology sessions

Thank you for your generosity and support!
